The definition of comprehension is the ability to understand information that is heard, read or seen. In order to comprehend, a number of processes need to happen. Beginning the process is early literacy skills or the ability to recognise names of letters, match sounds with letters, break words sounds and blend sounds into words (Suggate, Schaughency, McAnally & Reese, 2018).  A strong link between these skills and later vocabulary development, narrative and reading comprehension has been reported in numerous studies (Suggate et al., 2018).

Keeping in mind that a breakdown at one or more of these steps will hinder comprehension, let’s take a look at the process…
